STRAIGHT FROM THE SCIENTIST'S MOUTH
How do birds know to fly north again in the summer?
Bird migration is quite a complex process and each migrating species does it a little differently. For the most part, birds return to the north in the summer months because they require more room to breed and raise young, as well as a large supply of insects with which to feed them. The key signal that tells them it's time to head back is the temperature increase. However, bodily changes that occur in preparation for breeding also play a role. Regardless of the hows and the whys, we are certainly glad they make the journey; without them, we would have even more mosquitoes and insects during our northern summertime!
